Frequently Asked Questions

Reliable The Fence People has been serving New England for 70+ years. In our experience, here are the questions that are most often on our customers’ minds:

I want to go ahead with my fence project as proposed. What do I do?

Sign and date the proposal in the blue boxes at the bottom, initial Terms + Conditions #4 in the little blue box on the left side, circle and initial any options you’d like (if any options are listed separately), and return a copy along with a 50% deposit made out to Reliable The Fence People. You keep the bottom (yellow) copy for your records. Note that your price is good for 10 days – contact your Estimator if your time frame is beyond that.

I mailed back my proposal + deposit as described above. What happens next?

During our busy seasons, it typically takes 10-14 days from the time you mail your proposal for us to receive it and for your project to move through customer service, product ordering, and crew scheduling. After 2-3 weeks, your project will be assigned a “week of” installation window. At that time, you’ll receive an email confirming your installation week and reminding you of any responsibilities you may need to complete before the crew arrives. The afternoon prior to your installation, our Scheduler will contact you with the time you can expect to see the crew. During quieter periods (i.e. Winter), projects may move more quickly. Your Estimator will let you know if that is the case.

You mention my “responsibilities” above – what are those?

It depends on your project, so your Estimator will make your specific responsibilities clear to you. Typical customer responsibilities include marking the property lines and/or having the property surveyed, pulling permits and marking irrigation lines. Importantly, many projects require the homeowner to clear the new fence lines of brush/bushes/trees before the fence can be installed.

Even though I don’t live near any buried lines, does Reliable still need to call Dig Safe?

Yes. Every homeowner who hires a contractor to dig on their property is required by law to have a DigSafe permit no matter how unlikely it may seem that there are buried lines nearby the property. DigSafe typically comes out to the property within 3 business days, and you don’t need to be home when they arrive. Their permit is valid for 30 days and covers all public utilities/lines. Note that privately-owned lines (such as underground pipes, cables, gas, propane, electric, pool, and irrigation lines or systems) need to be marked by the homeowner.

Do I need to pull a permit for my fence?

Depends. In many towns you do, in others, you don’t, as long as certain benchmarks (like fence height, distance from the road, etc.) aren’t surpassed. The recent trend for most towns is to become stricter regarding fence permitting, so you should always check with your town’s building inspector before committing to a fence installation. Reliable cannot pull the permit for you.

Can I finance my new fence?

Yes! We offer financing options to help make your project more affordable. For full program details and to apply, please visit our Financing page.

My fence is going around my pool. Are there any special requirements?

Yes, absolutely. Every town has its own set of pool fence requirements, and each year a handful of towns change/update their requirements. It’s essential that your town’s Building Inspector give you the ok on your pool fence proposal. Meeting the Inspector with a detailed proposal in-hand from a reputable company like Reliable will aid in a smooth approval – most town officials are aware that Reliable is the industry leader and thus are accustomed to working with and approving our projects.

Is it the homeowner’s responsibility to ensure the fence is installed within the property boundaries?

Yes, the homeowner is responsible for knowing the property lines. Our crew will put the fence where the homeowner indicates, so it’s important that the property lines are clearly marked. The only way to know the property boundaries for sure is to have the property surveyed by a professional surveyor, and to have the lines clearly staked. The crew can then set up string lines between the stakes to ensure the fence is installed on the correct side of the property line. Any other means of property line identification (i.e. telephone poles, rock walls, plot plans) aren’t 100% dependable. So, if there are any property boundary questions whatsoever, we strongly encourage homeowners to have the property surveyed prior to the fence installation.

Do I need to be present during the fence installation?

It is highly recommended that you are home when the crew Foreman arrives on the first day. This allows you to walk the fence line together and discuss any important details before work begins. The Foreman will already have notes about your project, but he may have additional questions or items to confirm with you. After this initial 10-20 minute meeting, it is usually not necessary for you to remain home. Our Foremen are professional, approachable, and great communicators, so you are always welcome to check in or ask questions throughout the project.

Are my buried irrigation lines potentially a problem with my fence install?

Unfortunately, yes. Existing irrigation systems and new fence installations just weren’t meant to go together. Reliable crews will do their best to miss any sprinkler heads and irrigation lines that are flagged. Though they are always extremely careful, if a crew hits an unmarked sprinkler head or line, they’ll leave it exposed and tell you about it. It is usually a very quick and inexpensive fix for your irrigation company to perform, but those costs and arrangements are the homeowner’s responsibility.

What happens to the dirt/debris that is dug up out of the ground during my fence installation?

Our crews DO NOT remove the dirt, rocks, or earth that come out of the post holes. They will place some back into the holes as appropriate, and the remaining material will be left in a pile on your property for your use or disposal. If we are removing an old fence for you, please note that concrete bases or footings left in the ground are not included in your standard installation price. The crew can leave them for you to dispose of, or they can haul them away for an additional fee.

When is payment due on the balance of my fence project?

The balance is due to the Foreman before he leaves your property upon completion of your fence project. It’s always a good idea to walk the final fence lines with the Foreman so you can inspect and approve the final craftsmanship and address any issues at that point. Assuming you are pleased with the final product, payment at that point directly to the Foreman is greatly appreciated.

What’s my Warranty?

All our fences are covered by a one-year warranty starting from the date of installation. This warranty covers materials and workmanship for defects caused by normal conditions. It does not cover damage caused by external events such as storms, vandalism, vehicles, or Acts of Nature. For wood fences, please keep in mind that natural changes such as graying, shrinking, and minor cracking are expected over time. Regular cleaning and care by the homeowner will help maintain the fence’s appearance. Certain fence products may come with manufacturer warranties as well. Your Estimator can explain the details for your specific product.
